The Company: Mack Dawg
The Movie: Chulksmack
DVD Release Date: 2004
Description: Just where is the line drawn for going too far? I almost have to ask myself this after watching Chulksmack for the first time. Mack Dawg Productions made of the better movies in its history with the release of Pulse, featuring a satisfying blend of snowboard veterans along with some of the top guns. After that filming year, Mack Dawg cut a significant amount of snowboarders for the next filming year. This included some of the boarders that helped make Mack Dawg what it is today like Peter Line and Kevin Jones.
The 2003 movie was named Shakedown and featured some of the most progressive riding ever. It still featured some Mack Dawg veterans like Shaun White, Chris Brown, and Kale Stephens, but boasted a large cast of new faces. I personally have not been able to get my hands on Shakedown but taking a look at that roster, it must have looked similar to Chulksmack's roster.
Also, after several years of filming and editing with MDP, Sean Kearns was no longer the editor for the film crew. He left and started his own professional agency service, leaving a gap at his old position. Mack Dawg responded by hiring Brad Kremer, the former editor at the now defunct Kingpin production. Kearn's name is still in the credits for filming a few shots for Chulksmack.
Starring
Seth Huot, Wille Yli Luoma, JP Solberg, Micah McGinnity, Jeremy Jones, Lukas Huffman, Jussi Oksanen, JP Walker, Heikki Sorsa, and David Carrier Porcheron(DCP).
Just a few thoughts on that roster...MAN! it is really, really small. I guess it still featuers Jeremy Jones and JP Walker who have been filming with Mack Dawg since 1997. Almost every rider is given his own segment, making this movie really short.
Gaining the opening part is Seth Huot from Utah. He is one of the young guns who is really stepping up the game on rails. His section starts with a series of bails, mostly off of handrails. I was honestly surprised that he got up after some of them, even showing a short shot of him lying in a hospital bed. When he manages to stay standing and come off the end of the rail, he truly is one of the best in the biz. He also has a few good air moves thrown in there for a well rounded experience.
The only split rider-section in the whole film, the next really does not disappoint. It has Wille Yli Louma, who mainly pulls his moves in the backcountry. One of his highlights is a huge 360, I think he launches about 30 feet into the air while doing the trick. JP Solberg gets his chance with the next sequence and he rides similar terrain as Wille did. Last but not least is another young gun Micah McGinnity, who does nothing but railslides in his section.
One of the riders that has filmed with Mack Dawg the longest is Jeremy Jones, who has been with them since 1997. Jeremy had one of the best sections of all time in last years movie, and certainly doesn't disappoint in Chulksmack. In what is most likely the longest segment of any in the movie, he slaughters a number of tricky handrails while landing lots of solid air moves. After Jeremy is Lukas Huffman, who rides some of the craziest natural terrain and sometimes does tricks off cliffs. Unfortunately, he was injured early in the season and doesn't have much footage logged.
In 2004, a major film company named Robot Food folded, leaving some of their best riders available to other film companies. One of those such riders in Jussi Oksanen. He has had some very minor segments in past MDP films, and this is his first one. Jussi almost looks unhuman landing almost everything he tries, just making it look easy. Another MDP veteran is JP Walker, who has his what could be his final video segment with MDP. JP's part is quite short compared to his past ones, but he still manages to prove he is still one of the best.
Yet another recent newcomer to MDP is amazing Fin Heikki Sorsa. I love just about every single aspect of how he rides. He strays from the handrails that almost all of the other riders are doing, and has great style. He is very smooth looking in the air and looks like he never left the ground when he lands. This could easily be called my favorite part of the movie. Landing the closing segment is Canada's David Carrier-Porcheron or better known as DCP. He also strays from the handrails and delivers very solid footage from the backcountry. He also throws and lands one of the smoothest 720's I’ve ever seen.
